HarperCollins Children’s Books today announces Cinders and Sparks: a fresh new series concept developed by HarperCollins, written by bestselling adult author Lindsey Kelk and charmingly brought to life by acclaimed picture book illustrator, Pippa Curnick.

Perfect for readers aged 7-9, Cinders and Sparks: Magic at Midnight will publish in June 2019 as a tentpole launch for the HarperCollins Children’s list, with three titles planned for the first year. A funked-up, funny and feisty take on the beloved Cinderella story, it combines adventure, dresses, talking dogs, cake and pure comic silliness in a ridiculously entertaining story.

From an original concept created by HarperCollins, Cinders and Sparks was developed with Lindsey Kelk, who will bring her stellar writing skills to the first three books in the series, drawing both on her experience as a children’s book editor and her jet-setting life as a bestselling author and fashion journalist, to bring unique, filmic sparkle and brio. Pippa Curnick, rising picture book star, will illustrate with all the ingenuity, animation and fun of the hilarious text.

Commenting on the deal, Nick Lake said, “We have a fantastically strong slate of 5-8 and 7-9 fiction coming up at HarperCollins, and I’m especially excited about this brilliantly written, escapist-and-yet-inspiring story, which finally brings the stuff of the best kids’ movies into book form. This is series fiction for the generation who grew up watching Frozen.”

Lindsey Kelk began her career as a children’s book editor and is now a bestselling author and journalist, with more than fourteen books to her name, including the hugely successful I Heart series. Her novels have been published in twenty-five languages and have sold over 1.2 million copies around the world, and over 700,000 through TCM in the UK. Lindsey lives in LA. Cinders and Sparks is her first book for children

Pippa Curnick studied at Camberwell College of Art before graduating from the University of Derby with a First-Class degree in illustration. She has illustrated several picture books and fiction for Hodder, Farshore and Usborne, as well as drawing new covers for major fiction brands, including Enid Blyton.

Cinders lives a boring life with her grumpy stepmother and mean stepsisters. So when her wishes start magically coming true, and her dog, Sparks, starts to talk, it’s a bit of a surprise, to say the least. Then Cinders meets her fairy godmother: she’s magic, she can fly, and she’s called… Brian. But Brian is NOT very reliable and Cinders is NOT very good at magic. Soon, Cinders finds herself living a life that is not boring at all – it’s total chaos!

Cinders and Sparks: Magic at Midnight is published on 30th May 2019.
